What a WiFi QR code does

A WiFi QR code carries your network name, your password and the type of security in one short line of text. When a phone camera reads it, the phone recognizes the format, shows a prompt such as "Join this network?" and connects after one confirmation. iPhone and most Android phones do this from the built-in camera, so guests do not need an app.

The text inside follows a simple convention: it starts with WIFI: and then lists the security type, the network name and the password, ending with two semicolons. Names or passwords that contain a backslash, semicolon, comma, colon or double quote need an escape character in front of them, and this generator adds it for you. That is the usual reason hand-written WiFi codes fail on networks with symbols in the password.

The code is static. The network details sit inside the image itself, nothing is sent to a server, and the code keeps working for as long as the network name and password stay the same. If you change the password on your router, the old code stops working and you need to make a new one.

How to make a WiFi QR code in three steps

  1. 01

    Enter the network details

Type the network name exactly as it appears on your devices, including capital letters and spaces. Add the password, then pick the security type: WPA covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3, which is what almost every router uses today. Choose None only for an open network.

  2. 02

    Mark hidden networks

If your router does not broadcast its name, set Hidden network to Yes. Without that flag a phone may look for the network, not find it and give up.

  3. 03

Style it, test it, download it

Change the colors or shapes if you like, then scan the preview with a phone that is not already connected. When the join prompt appears, download an SVG for print or a PNG for a screen.

Where a WiFi QR code is useful

  • Cafés, restaurants and shops

A small card on the table or next to the till saves staff from answering the same question all day. Print the code with a short line such as the network name so people know what they are joining.

  • Homes and rental properties

Put the code on the fridge, in a frame near the entrance or in the welcome book. Guests connect on arrival and you never have to spell a long password.

  • Offices and meeting rooms

A separate guest network with its own code keeps visitors off the staff network. Place the code in the reception area or in each meeting room.

  • Events and classrooms

Show the code on a slide or a badge so a whole room can connect in seconds. Create a new network password for each event and a new code with it.

  • Coworking and hotels

Print different codes for different networks, for example one for the lobby and one for the rooms, and label each clearly.

Tips for a WiFi code that keeps working

Use a guest network
Anyone who scans the code can join. Put it on a guest network, separate from the devices and files you care about, and change the password if the code spreads further than you wanted.
Match the name exactly
Network names are case-sensitive. A code for "Cafe-Guest" will not join "cafe-guest".
Re-make the code after a password change
The password is stored in the image. Old printed codes become useless the moment the password changes, so keep the editable version, or use a password you rarely change.
Test on an iPhone and an Android phone
Both read the standard format, but older Android versions may need the Settings or an installed scanner. Keep the written password nearby as a fallback.

WiFi QR code questions

Is the WiFi QR code generator free?

Yes. You can create the code, style it and download it as PNG, JPG, WEBP or SVG without signing in.

Is my password sent to your servers?

No. The editor builds the code in your browser, and the password is only used to draw it. If you save the code in an account, the details are stored with that code.

Which security type should I choose?

Choose WPA for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 networks, which covers nearly every router sold in recent years. WEP is an old standard that you should only select if your network really uses it. Choose None for an open network without a password.

Can I make the code work with a hidden network?

Yes. Set Hidden network to Yes so phones know to search for a name that is not being broadcast.

Do phones need an app to scan it?

No. The camera app on current iPhone and Android phones recognizes the format and offers to join. Some older devices may need a scanner app.

Can I track how many people joined?

No. A WiFi code is static and carries no link, so there is nothing to count. Dynamic codes count scans, but they are for web addresses, not for network details.
