UPI QR Code Generator for Payments

A UPI code carries a upi://pay link with your UPI ID and, when you set one, an amount in Indian rupees. Scanning it opens the payer's UPI app with those details filled in, and the payer approves the payment there.

What a UPI QR code does

UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is the instant payment system used across India. A UPI QR code holds a link that begins with upi://pay and names the payee's UPI ID in the pa parameter. The payee name goes in pn, an optional amount in am and a note in tn, and cu is set to INR only when an amount is present. A UPI app that reads the link fills in those fields and waits for the payer to check them.

The code does not receive or move money. It is a request that carries details into the payer's app, and the transfer happens inside that app once the payer confirms it. The generator does not contact a bank, a payment provider or a UPI app, and it does not check that the UPI ID exists. Any check happens in the payer's app when they pay.

The code is static, so the UPI ID, name and amount are written into the image. Changing any of them means making a new code. Leave the amount empty and the payer's app asks for the sum, which suits donations and open tabs better than a fixed bill.

How to make a UPI QR code in three steps

  1. 01

Enter the UPI ID and payee name

Type the UPI ID in the UPI ID field, in the form name@bank, exactly as your payment app shows it. Add the Payee name, which the payer sees before they pay. Use the name registered with your bank so that the payer recognizes it.

  2. 02

Set the amount and note, if needed

Enter the Amount only for a fixed sum, and write it with a dot as the decimal separator, for example 250.50. The Note field is optional and is sent as the transaction note, which makes a useful place for an invoice number or the name of an event. Leave Amount empty when the payer should choose the sum.

  3. 03

    Test the preview, then download

Scan the preview with a phone that has a UPI app installed, but do not confirm a real payment. Check that the app shows the UPI ID, payee name, amount and note you entered. Then download an SVG for print or a PNG for a counter display.

Where a UPI QR code is useful

  • Small shops and market stalls

A printed code by the till lets customers pay the shop's UPI ID without a card terminal. Use the business name as the payee name, so customers recognize who they are paying.

  • Freelancers and service providers

Put a code on an invoice or a business card so a client can open the payment directly. Write the invoice number in the Note field so both sides can match the payment later.

  • Donations and community collections

A code on a notice board or a stall lets people give without a fixed sum, so each person types their own amount. Name the collection in the Note field so the payment is easy to identify.

  • Restaurants and events

A table card with a code lets guests settle a bill by scanning, when the total is known in advance. Make one code per table or per bill, because the amount is part of the code.

  • Clubs, schools and membership fees

Print one code for a membership fee and put the month or term in the Note. Make a new code whenever the fee changes, since the old one keeps the old amount.

Tips for a UPI code that opens cleanly

Check the UPI ID carefully
A UPI ID is a short address with an @ sign and a handle, and one wrong letter can point to another account or to none at all. Copy it from your payment app instead of retyping it from memory.
Keep the payee name familiar
The payee name appears in the payer's app, where they decide whether the payment looks right. A name that matches your registered account name is easier to recognize than a nickname.
Write the amount as a plain number
Use digits and a dot, such as 1200 or 1200.50, without currency symbols or thousands separators. The field sends the value as you type it, so a comma can be read differently by the app.
Make a new code when figures change
A static code keeps the amount it was made with. A price change, a new term or a different invoice needs a new code, so keep a note of the values you used for each printed one.

UPI QR code questions

Is the UPI QR code generator free?

Yes. Creating and downloading a UPI code does not require an account, and you can save the result as PNG, JPG, WEBP or SVG.

Does the QR code send the money to me?

The code only carries the destination details. The payer's UPI app shows them, and the payment goes through only when the payer confirms it inside that app.

Can the code take a payment on its own?

No. The code only opens a payment screen in the payer's app. The generator has no access to bank accounts and does not connect to any UPI provider.

Why does my code show a UPI ID but no amount?

The amount is optional. When the field is empty, the link leaves out the amount parameter and the currency with it, so the payer's app asks them for the sum. Enter an amount only when the price is fixed.

Can I see how many people paid?

No. A UPI code is static and contains no web link, so there is no scan count. Dynamic codes count scans, but the upi scheme is not one they can redirect to, so this type cannot be made dynamic.

Is a UPI code approved by a bank or a regulator?

No. The generator draws a code in the UPI link format and makes no claim of approval, certification or compliance by a bank, a payment network or a regulator. Check the rules that apply to your own payments with your bank.
