Choosing a barcode format
Barcodes are not interchangeable. A retail scanner expects EAN or UPC numbers that follow a global numbering scheme, a warehouse might need Code 128 for internal labels, and small parts are often marked with Data Matrix. The format decides which characters are allowed and how long the value can be, so the first step is to pick the one your scanner, your customer or your carrier asks for.
For products sold in shops, use EAN-13 or UPC-A, or EAN-8 for very small packaging. For cartons, ITF-14 is the usual choice because it prints well on corrugated board. For general internal use, Code 128 holds any printable ASCII text in a compact symbol, and Code 39 stays popular where older equipment is still in service. Data Matrix is a two-dimensional symbol that stores a lot in a tiny square.
Each generator checks the value you enter against the rules of the format and shows a clear message when something is wrong. For the GS1 formats, the check digit is added for you when you give the shorter form. Colors, bar height, scale and the text under the bars can be adjusted, and the result downloads as SVG, PNG, JPG or WEBP.

Printing tips
- Keep the quiet zone
- Leave a blank margin on both sides of the bars. Scanners need it to find where the symbol starts.
- Use dark bars on a light background
- The highest contrast is black on white. Reversed or low-contrast colors may not read on some scanners.
- Print at the size your scanner expects
- Vector SVG scales without blur, but do not shrink the bars below what your scanner can resolve.
