SMS QR Code Generator
Scan the code and the phone opens a text message addressed to the number you entered, with your message already in the box. The person still taps send, so the code starts the conversation without delivering anything on its own.
What an SMS QR code does
An SMS QR code holds a text-message link: the phone number first, then an optional body parameter with the message. When a camera reads it, the phone opens its messaging app with a new message to that number. The content is plain text, so anyone who has a copy of the image can read the number and the message.
Phones and messaging apps do not all handle the message part of the link in the same way. The box may come pre-filled on one phone and empty on another, even when the number is correct. Test the code on each system your recipients use before you print it, and keep the message short enough that an empty box still makes sense to the reader.
The code is static. The number and the message stay as printed, and the code cannot count scans or report replies. A changed number means a new code, and a new code means a new print, so plan for that before you commit to a large run of posters.
How to make an SMS QR code in three steps
-
01
Enter the phone number
Enter the number in the Phone number field, with the plus sign before the country code. The editor keeps only the digits and the plus sign, so spaces, dashes and brackets from a business card are removed for you.
-
02
Write the message
Type the words in the Message field. Keep them short and clear, because the reader sees them in the box and may send them unchanged. Accents and emoji are encoded automatically, so the characters reach the link intact.
-
03
Preview, test and download
Scan the preview with a phone and check that the message box opens with the right number and text. Then download a PNG or an SVG, choosing an export size from 512 to 4096 pixels, and print the number in plain text beside the code.
Where an SMS QR code is useful
-
Sign-up keywords on flyers
A flyer in a shop can open a message with a short sign-up word already typed in, so a visitor joins a list by sending it. Make the word easy to type, and say in the printed text what happens next.
-
Order and table requests
A café can print a code that opens a message with the table or party size already in the box. The guest adjusts the wording and sends it, which saves a call when the line is busy.
-
Return and repair requests
A label on a product can open a message to the support number with the order reference already typed. The customer adds the details, so the reference arrives with every request.
-
Parking lots and pickup counters
A sign in a parking lot or at a collection counter can open a message to the staff phone with a ready phrase, such as the bay number or the time. Staff see the bay first, which speeds up the answer.
-
Feedback at events
A badge or a stand can open a message to the organizer with a short question typed in. Replies arrive as ordinary texts, so the team answers from the phone it already carries.
Tips for an SMS code that works across phones
- Test on iPhone and Android
- The same code can open the box with text on one phone and an empty box on another. Scan it on both systems, in the messaging app people really use, and write the message as a short instruction so an empty box still makes sense.
- Type the number with its country code
- A number without the country code may point to a different country or to nothing. Write the country code followed by the national number, and let the editor remove the spaces for you.
- Keep the message short
- A long message fills the box and may be cut off in the messaging app. Put the key words first, so the reader sees them even when the box shows only one line.
- Write the number beside the code
- A code that fails on an older phone should not leave the reader stranded. Print the number in plain text under the code, so anyone can dial or message it by hand.
SMS QR code questions
Does the code send the text by itself?
No. It opens the messaging app with the number and message filled in, and the person taps send. Nothing is delivered until they do.
Can one code message several numbers?
No. The generator writes one phone number into the link. For a group, send to a shared number that forwards the messages to the team.
Why does the message box sometimes look empty?
Phones and messaging apps read the message part of the link differently, so a box can stay empty even though the number is right. Check each system before printing, and keep the message short so people can type it quickly.
Does the editor check the number?
It keeps only the digits and the plus sign, so letters and punctuation disappear. It does not confirm that the number exists or that it can receive texts.
Can I count how many people scanned the code?
Not with a static code, which holds only the number and the message. Dynamic codes count scans on the Pro plan and above, and they accept a text message link as a target, so the destination can be changed later.
Does the code work on a screen as well as in print?
Yes. A PNG or an SVG shows well on slides, and on a screen the code stays sharp when the export size is large enough for the space it fills.
