Google Maps QR Code Generator

A Google Maps code sends a phone to one place on the map, such as your shop, office or venue, where the visitor can read the opening hours, browse photos and ask for directions. Copy the share link from Google Maps and paste it once, and the rest is handled for you.

What a Google Maps QR code opens

A Google Maps code holds a web link to one place. The link is the short address that Google Maps creates when someone chooses Share, and it usually begins with maps.app.goo.gl. The camera on any phone reads the code and follows the link, either in the Maps app or in the browser when the app is not installed. The scanner lands on the place card, with its name, rating, opening hours and photos.

The code can also hold raw coordinates, which the location type covers, but the two tools do different jobs. A place link keeps the business name, reviews and photos that belong to the listing. Coordinates only mark a point with a pin and carry no name at all. Choose the place link when the visitor should recognize a business, and choose coordinates when you need an exact spot that has no listing behind it, such as a gate or a trailhead.

The link is written into the image when you download the code. Google can edit a listing later, so check the preview again after a major change such as a new name or a permanent closure, and reprint any sign whose code no longer matches what the card shows.

Creating a Google Maps code in three steps

  1. 01

    Copy the share link

Search for the place in Google Maps, open its card and choose Share. Copy the short link from that dialog, which is the form that opens the card on any phone, and leave the long address from the browser bar alone.

  2. 02

Paste it into the Website URL field

The editor opens the Website URL type with the Google Maps prefix already in the field. Paste the full link in its place so the address appears only once, then read the value back and remove any space at the start or the end before you continue.

  3. 03

Check the card on two phones, then download

Test the preview on a phone with Maps installed, then on one without it. Both should open the same place card. Download an SVG for signage or menus and a PNG for a screen, and keep the dark modules strong against a light background so the code reads from a short distance.

Where a Google Maps code earns its place

  • Shop doors and counters

A cafe or repair shop can put the code by the door, so a passer-by who is unsure about the hours taps once and sees the schedule, the photos and the route from where they stand.

  • Invitations and event cards

A wedding, a launch party or a conference can print the code beside the venue name. Guests save the place in their own map app and return to it on the day without copying a street address by hand.

  • Hotel desks and city guides

A hotel reception or a museum panel can list nearby places with one code each. Visitors who scan them see current opening hours, which change more often than a printed leaflet can keep up with.

  • Takeaway bags and receipts

A bakery or a takeaway counter can print the code on a bag or a receipt. Customers check the hours and call the shop before they walk over, which avoids a wasted trip on a day the doors are closed.

  • Property boards and rental signs

A letting agent placing a board outside a building can link the listing of its own office. Passers-by who see the sign confirm the agency name, the reviews and the location with a single scan.

Tips for a Google Maps code that opens the right place

Pick the right listing
A busy area can hold a duplicate or an old listing with a similar name. Search for the place, confirm the address, phone number and hours on its card, and only then copy the share link, so the code does not send people to another entry.
Paste the link without extra text
Copying from a message or a web page can add a word, a line break or a tracking fragment to the end of the link. Read the field back after pasting. A clean link produces a simpler pattern, and a simpler pattern scans faster when it is printed small.
Print the name beside the code
The place card shows its name once a phone opens it, but the printed code shows nothing until you add a caption. Write the name in the same words as the storefront sign, so the visitor knows which card to expect before scanning.
Recheck after a listing change
A business that changes its name, moves its entrance or closes for good changes the card a code opens. Scan the code again after any large edit to the listing, and reprint the sign when the card no longer matches the printed text.

Google Maps QR code questions

Is the Google Maps QR code generator free?

Yes. Static codes cost nothing to make, and an account is optional. An account lets you keep codes for later. Dynamic codes, which count scans or let you change the destination after printing, belong to a paid plan.

Does the visitor need Google Maps to use the code?

No. Every phone camera can follow the link inside the code. If Google Maps is not installed, the place card opens in the browser instead, so the scanner still sees the hours, the photos and the directions option.

When should I use a place link instead of coordinates?

Use a place link when the visitor should recognize a business, because the link carries its name, reviews and photos. Use coordinates for a bare point such as a gate or a trailhead, where no listing exists to open.

Can the code start navigation directly?

The code opens the place card, and the visitor chooses the directions button from there. A code cannot begin a route on its own, so the choice of travel mode and starting point stays with the person who scans.

What makes a scan land in the browser?

The phone chooses the program for a web link. When Google Maps is installed and set as the handler, the link normally opens inside it; otherwise a browser shows the same card. The code itself does not pick between them.

Can I point the code to another place later?

A static code cannot change its target, since the link is part of the image. Moving to another place means making a new code and printing it again. Dynamic codes can send scans to a different destination later, but they require a paid plan.
