Data Matrix Barcode Generator
Data Matrix is a two-dimensional code that stores text in a compact square, so it fits where a linear barcode would be too long. Type the text you need, which can be a link, a serial number or a record, and the generator draws the square.
How a Data Matrix code stores data
Data Matrix is a two-dimensional symbology. Its data is arranged as a grid of dark and light square modules. An L-shaped finder pattern along two sides, and an alternating edge along the other two, tell a reader where the grid starts and how large it is. Because the data fills the whole grid, one symbol holds far more characters than a linear code of the same width.
The generator accepts any text from one to 1,500 characters, with no control characters such as line breaks or tabs. Unlike QR codes, the editor offers no error-correction level and no version picker: the grid size follows from the content, so longer text gives a larger square. Use the Size setting to control how big each module prints.
The generator does not keep a record of what you encode, count scans or redirect anyone. Whatever you type is stored in the image itself, so anyone who decodes the square reads the same text. Avoid putting private data into a code that will be printed on objects the public can handle.
Data Matrix suits applications where the code must survive small sizes and demanding surfaces, but it asks more of the reader than a linear code does. Test with the scanner your staff or customers actually use, because a 2D reader that works well on a screen may struggle with a small matte label in dim light.
How to make a Data Matrix code in three steps
-
01
Choose Data Matrix and enter the text
Pick Data Matrix in Type, then type the text in Value. Use an example fills the field with a sample web address as text. The hint under the field gives the limit of 1500 characters, and the editor reports control characters if you paste them in.
-
02
Set the colors and the size
Bar color sets the color of the dark modules and Background sets the rest. Size controls how large each module prints. Bar height does not apply to a square code, and Show the number has no effect on Data Matrix, so the preview shows only the square.
-
03
Preview, scan and download
Scan the preview at the size it will print with a phone camera or a dedicated 2D reader. Download SVG for label printers and print shops, or PNG, JPG or WEBP for screens and documents.
Where Data Matrix codes are used
-
Small electronic components
Circuit boards, chips and connectors have little room for a label. A Data Matrix in a small area can hold a part number and a batch code in one square.
-
Pharmaceutical and medical packs
Packs in regulated supply chains often carry a two-dimensional symbol for lot and expiry data. Confirm the required content and format with your regulator and quality team before you design the pack, because this generator only draws the code.
-
Laboratory samples
Sample tubes and slides can carry a short code that points to a record in the lab system. A square code reads from any direction, so the tube does not have to be turned to a fixed angle.
-
Industrial parts and tools
Machined parts and tools often need a serial number too small for a linear code. A Data Matrix with a short serial keeps the mark readable on a surface only a few millimeters wide.
-
Printed forms and file references
A Data Matrix on a printed form or a document cover can hold a file reference that a scanner reads straight into a document system, without retyping.
Tips for Data Matrix codes that scan at small sizes
- Keep the content short
- The 1,500 character limit is the most a code can hold, but short text makes a smaller grid with larger modules, which prints and scans more reliably. Use a short link instead of a full record when you can.
- Test the smallest size first
- Scanners need enough resolution for each module. Print at the smallest size you plan to use and check the scan there, because a code that scans well on a screen may fail on the real part.
- Keep a clear margin
- A square code needs clear space around it. Leave the area free of other marks, and avoid placing the code over a seam, a curve or a textured edge where you can.
- Use the contrast scanners expect
- Dark modules on a light background read best. Inverse printing or laser marking can lower the contrast, so check the result on the actual material before you approve a run.
Data Matrix questions
What is the difference between Data Matrix and QR?
Both are two-dimensional codes. Data Matrix uses an L-shaped finder pattern and a compact square that suits small parts, while QR codes have three corner markers and offer error-correction levels that you can choose in the QR editor.
How many characters fit in a Data Matrix?
The generator accepts from one to 1,500 characters without control characters. The real capacity of a symbol depends on the characters used and on the grid size, which the generator sets from the content.
Can I encode a link in a Data Matrix?
Yes. Type the full address in Value. The address is plain text inside the symbol, so a scanner returns it and the phone can open it.
Does the Show the number option change the code?
No. A Data Matrix has no printed number under it, so that option has no effect on this symbology in the editor.
Can I change the content after I print?
No. The content is stored in the square itself. To change it, create a new code and print it again, which is why short, stable content is easier to manage.
Is Data Matrix suitable for outdoor use?
That depends on the material and the printing process, not on the generator. Test the code on the surface and under the conditions it will meet, and check it again after exposure.
Can a Data Matrix be printed very small?
Yes, but a smaller square gives the scanner less detail to work with. Choose the shortest content that does the job, make each module as large as the surface allows, and check the scan at the real size.
