Text QR Code Generator

The text you type becomes the whole content of the code, with no link, no redirect and no server in between. It suits notes, reference numbers and instructions that a reader needs even when there is no connection.

What a text QR code holds

A text QR code stores the characters you type with no prefix and no action attached. The editor passes the text through unchanged, so a scanner receives what you entered, line breaks included. A phone that reads it shows the words on screen, and depending on the phone or the scanner app it may also offer to copy them or search for them.

Capacity is the real limit. In byte mode the largest QR code holds 2,953 bytes at the lowest error correction level and 1,273 bytes at the highest. Letters with accents and other non-ASCII symbols take more than one byte in UTF-8, and emoji take even more, so the same number of characters can produce a larger code than plain text would.

A text code does not change and does not count anything. Once printed, the words are fixed, and no scan is recorded anywhere. If the content must be edited or tracked, a link to a page is usually the better choice, and the URL code type covers that case.

How to make a text QR code in three steps

  1. 01

    Write the message

Type the content into the Text field. It accepts several lines, so a short list of codes or instructions can sit in one place. The editor keeps leading and trailing spaces as typed, so remove them before you generate the code.

  2. 02

    Choose the error correction level

Short text can use level L, which keeps the pattern simple. Levels M, Q and H add redundancy against damage, and in return they add modules, so a long text grows quickly. Preview each change and check the density before you settle on a level.

  3. 03

    Preview, test and download

Watch the readability meter, then scan the preview with a phone held at the distance people will use. Download an SVG for print or a PNG for a screen, and pick an export size between 512 and 4096 pixels.

Where a text QR code is useful

  • Serial and asset numbers

Put a serial or asset number on equipment so a technician can scan it and read the value without typing. Keep the value exactly as the label prints it, hyphens and capitals included, so a search matches the record.

  • Recipes and assembly steps

A card in a kitchen or a box of parts can hold the steps in short form. Use plain line breaks rather than decorative symbols, so the text stays easy to read after a scan.

  • Offline checklists for field work

Inspectors, volunteers and hikers often work where there is no signal. A code with the checklist or a grid reference reads without any connection, because the words are inside the image.

  • Room names and seat codes

A printed card at a venue can carry a room name, a seat or a short code word. The words appear as soon as the code is scanned, so the reader does not have to tap anything to see them.

  • Gift tags and greetings

A tag can hold a short poem or a greeting that the recipient scans to read. Keep the text brief enough for the printed size, and add a line of ordinary text beside the code so people know what it says.

Tips for text that stays readable when scanned

Keep it short
A code with a few dozen characters scans from farther away than a dense paragraph printed in the same space. For long text, print the code larger or put the full version on a page and point a URL code at it.
Watch accents and emoji
Letters with accents and symbols take more bytes than plain letters, and emoji take even more. Some scanners show them correctly and others show question marks or odd characters, so test each scanner you expect people to use.
Do not print what you may need to change
The words are fixed inside the image. A changed serial number, a new menu line or a corrected instruction means a new code and a new print. Keep the editable text in a document, so the next version takes a minute to make.
Put the words beside the code
A scanner that fails or an unfamiliar phone leaves the reader with nothing. Print a line of plain text beside the code that describes what it holds, so the code is a shortcut rather than the only copy of the information.

Text QR code questions

Does a text QR code open a website?

No. A plain text code holds words, not an address, so the phone shows the text and does not open a browser. Some scanner apps offer a search for the text instead.

How much text fits in one code?

The limit depends on the characters and on the error correction level. In byte mode the largest QR code holds 2,953 bytes at level L and 1,273 bytes at level H. Practical codes are far smaller, because a dense code is harder to scan.

Can I put line breaks in the text?

Yes. The field keeps the line breaks you type, and a scanner shows them as breaks. Use them to separate items, but avoid decorative spacing, which adds characters that the reader does not need.

Does the text pass through a server?

No. The editor draws the code in your browser from the characters you typed, and the text lives inside the image. Saving the code to an account keeps the text on record with it.

Can I edit the text after I print?

Not in the image. The words are part of the code, so a change needs a new code and a fresh print. Keep the text in an editable file so the next version is quick to make.

Why do some characters look wrong after a scan?

A common cause is character encoding: the scanner may not read the same bytes as the characters you typed. Test accented words and emoji on the phones you expect to use, and replace any symbol that breaks with plain letters if its meaning matters.
